If you share your life with a Cockapoo, Cavapoo, Labradoodle, Goldendoodle, Sheepadoodle or any of the many poodle crosses now filling our parks and pavements, you already know two things to be true.
The first is that these dogs are wonderful. Affectionate, funny, clever, endlessly people-focused.
The second is that they can be hard work in ways nobody warned you about.
Doodle crossbreeds now make up over a third of the UK pet dog population, and in nearly 40 years of working with dogs I've watched the questions coming into my inbox shift dramatically. They're rarely "how do I teach a sit?" these days. They're more like:
If you read that list and felt a flicker of recognition, this post is for you.
Here's the thing that gets missed in the breed hype: you're not living with one breed, you're living with a blend of working genetics, all wrapped in a coat that needs daily attention.
Poodles are intelligent, quick to learn and quick to form associations, including the ones we'd rather they didn't. Cockers are biddable and sensitive. Retrievers were bred to carry things in their mouths and to work alongside people all day. Collies, in the case of sheepadoodles, bring drive and an eye for movement.
Put those qualities together and you get a dog who is highly social, highly intelligent and emotionally sensitive. Those are genuinely lovely traits. They're also exactly the traits that make a dog more prone to anxiety, over-arousal, frustration and reactivity when their needs aren't being met or when something frightening happens at the wrong moment.
Which is why so many Doodle owners end up feeling like they've somehow failed. You haven't. You've got a clever, sensitive dog and nobody handed you the manual.
Let's talk about the other thing making this harder than it needs to be.
You Google the problem. One person tells you to ignore the behaviour entirely. The next tells you to correct it firmly. A third recommends a gadget. A fourth tells you it's a dominance issue. A fifth video has 400,000 views and is confidently, demonstrably wrong.
Meanwhile your dog is still barking, still lunging, still guarding the sock they stole from the washing pile and now you're second-guessing every single thing you do with them.
Conflicting advice doesn't just waste your time. It erodes your confidence, and dogs are extraordinarily good at reading hesitation in the person holding the lead.
What actually creates lasting change is understanding why your dog behaves the way they do. Once you can see the emotion driving the behaviour , fear, frustration, over-arousal, anxiety, the right response usually becomes obvious. That's the shift I want to give you.
The Doodle Dog Academy is a monthly membership built specifically for Cockapoo and Doodle owners who want ongoing, expert support rather than a one-off fix.
It grew directly out of my Cockapoo & Doodle Dog Hub group on Facebook, where the same questions came up again and again, and where a Facebook comment box was never going to be enough space to answer them properly.
Here's what's included every month:
A live behaviour and training webinar. Each month tackles one key topic in depth: reactivity, excessive barking, resource guarding, grooming and handling, loose lead walking, recall, adolescence, settling and relaxation, body language, enrichment and mental wellbeing. Can't make it live? Every session is recorded and stored in the members' learning vault.
Live Q&A sessions. Bring your own dog, your own situation, your own stuck point. This is where the generic advice stops and the specific advice starts.
Exclusive training resources. Step-by-step guides, handouts, PDFs and training exercises you can work through at home, in your own time, at your dog's pace.
Evidence-based, force-free guidance. Everything I teach is grounded in modern behavioural science and in decades of hands-on work with these breeds including my own Doodle rescues, who have generously supplied me with plenty of first-hand experience of the problems we'll be covering.
A community of people who get it. There is something quietly powerful about talking to other owners who understand why you left the park in tears last Tuesday.
Optional one-to-one support. Members can add personalised online behaviour sessions at a discounted rate if they'd like guidance tailored specifically to their dog.
Honestly? Almost any Doodle owner.
Some members will join because they're already struggling with something and need a way forward. Others will join because they've got a puppy or adolescent and want to prevent the common issues these breeds run into, which, for the record, is the single best use of your time and money in dog training.
And plenty will join simply because they want to understand their dog better and be around people who feel the same way. Puppy, adolescent, adult or rescue, you'll find your place.
You do not need to have a "problem dog" to belong here.
The Academy launches this September, and to mark the launch I'm opening a limited Founding Member enrolment period.
£14.99 a month and if you join during that window, you keep that rate for as long as your membership stays active. It will never increase on you.
After the Founding Member period closes three months post-launch, membership moves to £29.99 per month. Joining early saves you over £180 a year, every year you stay.
There's no fixed-term contract, no hidden fees and no exit fees. It's a monthly payment you can cancel any time with one month's notice.
Places in the Founding Member window are limited, and the waitlist gets first notice when doors open.

You'll be the first to hear when we go live, and the first to be able to lock in the £14.99 rate.
Your Doodle is not a difficult dog. They're a clever, sensitive one who needs someone who understands what makes them tick and I'd love to help you become that person.
